The project aims to ensure environmental sustainability in Matka canyon, which according the IUCN, is categorized in the third category – Natural Monument. The project will support appropriate management of nature and natural resources and act towards conservation of landscapes by supporting the development of sustainable tourism and public awareness rising. The project strives towards maximizing the positive benefits of tourism to biodiversity, ecosystems, and economic and social development, while minimizing negative social and environmental impacts from tourism.

The development of sustainable tourism will contribute to revenue creation for maintenance of natural resources and income generation for local and indigenous communities. The project will foster social and cultural background of local community, specially impacting youth and women.

The overall objective of the project is to ensure environmental protection and conservation of the biodiversity in Matka canyon in accordance with the principle of sustainable development in the interest of the present and future development. The development of sustainable tourism, public awareness raising and education of local community and visitors will contribute to protection and conservation of natural resources in Matka canyon as one of the biggest refugial centres of relic and endemic flora and fauna in Republic of Macedonia.
